ある事柄に関して確信が持てないため、正確な陳述を避けるときにあいまいなかんじで終わらせることができるつなぎ語。これを使うときは正確な数字をともなう使い方はできない（だいたい10人とかいう言い方）

on the whole, broadly speaking はいずれも by and large (概して)と言い換えることができる
on the whole (全般的にみて), by and large (概して)、broadly speaking (大まかに言って)は3つとも文頭、文中、文尾のいずれの位置で用いても良い
